Soaring Association of Canada (SAC) is the National association for glider pilots in Canada.
SAC was incorporated in 1945 as a non-profit amateur sports association with a mandate to promote, enhance and protect the sport of soaring in Canada. SAC maintains a head office in Ottawa and operates under a Board of Directors made up of volunteer representatives from all regions of the country.
Through its various committees, SAC works with aviation authorities on issues such as licensing and medical requirements for glider pilots, airspace, communications, aircraft certification, and various other technical issues, to ensure that the regulatory environment is consistent with the best interests of the soaring community.
Staff and volunteers within the national office provide a range of services to clubs and individual pilots including: an aircraft and airfield insurance plan, instructors' courses, training manuals, and related materials, publicity materials, and "free flight / vol libre" - the quarterly magazine on the Canadian soaring scene containing news and articles in both official languages.
As an amateur sports organization, an important role played by SAC is that of Canada’s representative to the International Gliding Commission of the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI), the international body overseeing sport aviation and processing claims for internationally recognized achievements in soaring. SAC encourages soaring competitions throughout Canada, organized as provincial and national championships, the results of which are used to select glider pilots to represent Canada at FAI World Championships.
