Volunteering and Donations

The soaring community in Canada is fortunate in being able to draw on the services of a small group of dedicated volunteers to carry out the work of the Soaring Association of Canada. These volunteers are concerned with such matters as:

  • access to airspace
  • pilot medical requirements
  • licensing
  • pilot training and safety
  • publications
  • government regulations
  • insurance
  • sporting issues
  • homologation of FAI badge claims
  • soaring records
  • aircraft technical issues
  • maintaining the SAC web site
  • relations with other aviation groups
  • finances and so forth.

Of course, not everyone is qualified nor available to assist in these ways. However, each of us can support and encourage these efforts by donating to the Association. Donations to the Association are eligible for a tax receipt (non-arm's length donations excepted). Donations can be made for the general purposes of the Association or to one of it's funds, whose purposes are outlined below.

Additionally, donations can be accepted for certain specific purposes, not covered by the existing funds.

Pioneer Fund

The purpose of this fund is to provide an ongoing source of revenue to the Soaring Association of Canada. The capital of the fund is retained, and up to 50% of the earnings can be drawn on with the remainder reinvested to assist in the growth of the fund.

Jessie Glynn and Barrie Jeffery Funds

The purpose of these funds is to assist graduates of the Air Cadet league of Canada' glider pilot training program to maintain and enhance their aviation skills at SAC clubs and affiliated organisations. Currently five flying scholarships, with a value of $300 each, are provided each year. Only the investment earnings are drawn upon. The scholarships are supplemented by funding from Youth Flight Canada.

Wolf Mix Fund

This fund was created to support Canadian participation in world championship events. Only the fund's earnings are drawn upon, the capital is retained.

World Contest Fund

The purpose of this fund is to provide support to the Canadian team in the current World Championships. The fund does not accumulate assets over time.
