A Typical photo delcaration, pre take-off.

This system is now superseded by GPS.

The declaration board shows Iroquois Dam and Summerstown Airport as turnpoints but a shorter task was called in the air in view of weak conditions. The dark diagonal stripe in the photos is the Official Observer's photo control mark on the canopy. It is across the camera's field of view and appears in the all pictures taken while the camera was mounted in the cockpit.

This is the start photo, taken over Pendleton Airport (near Ottawa) at an altitude of between 3,000 and 3,500 feet. Note the gliders at the launch point below the wingtip. Since the runway visible ahead of them is all that is needed for landings, a suitable landing field would appear about that long from this height.

The Casselman turnpoint, seen here from around 1200 ft AGL, is a few miles south of Pendleton near Highway 417 and a train track. Note the yellowish fields with cut crop patterns in the middle and right foreground of the picture. These would be good landout choices if a climb away had failed. The green fields with mottled darker patches are rough pasture or crop and would be less desirable.
